Our Objectives

The objectives of the BBIAA are to (1) develop strong leadership qualities, (2) promote academic success, (3) provide financial support and (4) provide ongoing mentorship to collegiate percussionist on the Marching 101 Band located at South Carolina State University.

US Commission on Civil Rights

Studies show that minority students attending HBCUs have increased levels of engagement, more interactions with faculty and greater involvement with faculty research projects. They’re also 6-16% more likely to graduate than minority students enrolled at predominantly white institutions (PWIs).
For more than 100 years, HBCUs have been educating minorities, giving them economic opportunities and instilling great values. Not only have they consistently produced leaders in their communities and across the nation, but HBCUs today are consistently and affordably producing the leaders of the future.
Band helps students thrive in a multitude of ways, he adds, such as expressing themselves, dealing with stress and peer pressure, keeping them busy after school and out of trouble, and teaching them valuable lessons about hard work and discipline.
Studies references Black Creative Educational Experiences, like HBCU marching bands, as Black cultural capital that
allows Black people to “resist the despair and hopelessness brought about by a limited
opportunity structure."
